Instructions for Ice

Indications for Use: Acute pain, sharp shooting pain, swelling, joint pain

  • Ice 20 min then rest for 40 min
  • Repeat for 3 hours in a row
  • Then take a 2 hour break and you may repeat this therapy. Use a reusable ice pack so you can lay flat on it. you may want to put a thin towel between the ice pack and your skin.
  • CAUTION: Using ice constantly for a number of hours in a row may cause a decreased blood circulation in the area and may result in bedsores.

Instructions for Heat

Indications for Use: Chronic pain, muscle spasms, poor circulation

  • Moist heat for 20 min then rest for 40 min
  • Repeat for 3 hours in a row
  • Take 2 hours off and repeat as necessary
  • USE a microwavable hot pack. Microwave on high for 3-4 minutes (microwave intensity may vary) and do not get hot packs wet. Hot packs are available in the waiting room ranging from $10 to $15.
  • OR put a wet hand towel in the microwave for 1 minute or until warm/hot. Must re-heat multiple times for 20 minutes of heat.

Alternating Ice and Heat

Indications for Use: Tense and tight muscles along with swelling and joint pain.

  • Ice 10 min then follow with heat pack for 15-20 min
  • Take a 30 min break with out ice or heat
  • Repeat for 3 hours in a row
  • Then take a 2 hour break
